Meet Your Pharmacist

Born in December 1946, George Sprite Barbee III grew up in Sanford with aspirations of becoming an architect, but a summer working at his aunt’s drugstore in the Outer Banks convinced him otherwise. As a college student at UNC-Chapel Hill, Sprite divided his time between the two loves of his life: the pharmacy where he worked and his future wife, Connie Lilley. After graduating from UNC’s pharmacy school, Sprite married his sweetheart and the couple began their lives together.

In 1972, Sprite was drafted for service by the U.S. Army. He and his wife moved to Fayetteville until his service ended in 1973. After a brief stint in Fort Meyers, Florida, the couple settled in North Carolina once again.

With Connie working at an elementary school in Hamlet and Sprite working at Eckerds, the Barbees had their first child, Cragan, in 1979. In 1982, Sprite went to manage the Medicine Shop in Raeford and the couple added another daughter to the family, Lucia.

In 1984, the couple’s son, Christopher, was born – as well as a new business venture: a new pharmacy on Campus Avenue in Raeford. Barbee Pharmacy remained at this address for 16 years before moving to a new building on Harris Avenue in 2000. An additional 20 employees also joined the staff, including Connie as the senior manager and Cragan as an assistant pharmacy technician.

In 2009, Barbee Pharmacy celebrated its 25th year of business.
